Inaccurate Report Regarding "Swatting" in Rosemount

On Wednesday, September 21, multiple Twin Cities media outlets reported that a “swatting” incident impacted the City of Rosemount yesterday.  This report is inaccurate, as our officers did not respond to any similar calls yesterday and there was no risk to public safety.

“Swatting” is the practice of making a prank call or request to emergency services in attempt to get a large amount of public safety resources to respond to a fictitious emergency.  “As you can imagine, these types of irresponsible and deviant pranks create a lot of anxiety and stress for both first responders and members of our community.  We take these calls and issues seriously and will seek prosecution to the full extent of the law if and when they occur,” stated Chief Mikael Dahlstrom.

When we have reason to believe there is a risk to public safety, the Police Department utilizes a variety of means to inform and notify community members.  These means of community-wide communication include social media, the Everbridge Public Warning platform, and the Integrated Public Alert & Warning System (“IPAWS”), amongst others.  Learn more about local notification tools on the DCC 911 notifications page

The Rosemount Police Department works closely and communicates effectively with school administration in our area, especially when it involves public safety.
